Are tonsil stones a cause of tonsillitis?

Tonsil stones are thought to be fragments of jammed food that become lodged in holes and cracks on the surface of the tonsils. Naturally they decompose over time, causing a bad taste and smell. This decomposing also sets off a local inflammatory reaction. It seems plausible that this can then trigger tonsillitis?
