ABOUT MIKE

I spent 20 years as an NHS Consultant at one of the U.K.'s foremost, and oldest central London teaching hospitals, focusing on cancer treatment, in particular using lasers. I took early retirement to bring laser treatment more into the public domain for non cancer treatments, like tonsils and blocked noses.

ENT Laser Surgery Philosophy

In my practice, I want local anaesthetic day case surgery only - everyone goes home or back to work straight away. It's the modern way of treating ENT problems. I don't pack noses or do anything that might cause discomfort or a delay in discharge.

My re-admission rate with complications is 0.1% over the past 6 years at the main hospitals where I work - Spire London East and HealthHub. Unexpected overnight stay after a general anaesthetic (which I try to avoid) is very rare, almost everyone goes home the same day.

Lasers have been very useful in medicine, so a lot of what I do relates to this. Laser light can be very accurately focussed and pulsed into tiny spots that treat tissue in one of the most delicate parts of the body, which is the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT). This means that most nose and throat surgery in particular can be performed as day cases under local anaesthetic spray or dental-type injections, since blood loss is minimal due to the coagulating effect of lasers, and the procedure is clean and quick.

Technological advances are happening all the time in medicine and the world generally. I like to travel and observe these new procedures, implementing those that appear to show benefit. For this reason I have pioneered numerous techniques in the U.K., such as:

  • Intracapsular laser vapourisation tonsillectomy

  • Laser turbinoplasty under local anaesthetic

  • Photodynamic therapy for cancer

  • Laser mole removal

  • Water jet dissection for tumour removal

  • ImmunoCAP biochip allergy testing

  • Local anaesthetic spray (only) laser tonsillectomy

  • High definition video-endoscopy downloaded onto a USB business card
